What will become of the guilty Jackie Selebi?

Now that the trial of former South African police commissioner Jackie Selebi has come to an end and the judge has declared a guilty verdict, everyone awaits his sentencing on the 14th of July.

We await to see whether the sentence will be fitting of the crime or if will be a light slap on the wrist, an illusion of justice which will in fact, not be a sentence at all. We await to see if there will be any appeals by the defence and what winds of change such an appeal will possibly blow on the initial sentencing.

We await to see if there will be any parole board meetings to discuss medical parole and other similar excuses to get Selebi off the hook. At this point in time, there is no telling. One wishes the crystal ball could give away a few hints, but so far it reveals only a dark translucency that only time can wear away.
