Gotta love you true enemies!

Next time someone tells you that they do not like you much, or cannot stand your guts, count yourself as lucky and privileged. Lucky and privileged? Indeed! it could be worse. Had it been someone else, he or she might have chosen to hate your guts and wish you off the face of the earth, all under the cover of a fake, insincere smile. That would render you a potential victim for a painful backstabbing.

The saying that we must keep our friends close and our enemies closer has existed since Methuselah was in diapers. It is easy for your enemy to keep you close by pretending to be your friend, but how can you in turn keep your enemies close if you do not even know that they are your enemies? Imagine pouring your heart out to someone that you erringly consider to be a close friend. You share your secrets, your fears, your dreams and aspirations then later learn you are now the subject of cheap gossip. Surely little else can be as heart wrenching as having your fears and weaknesses used against you.

Give me an open and honest foe anyday. With him, I know exactly where I stand. There is no fake and valueless friendship and we know where we stand with each other. In some weird, somewhat twisted and ironic manner, this open enmity is guided by mutually established boundaries and respect. There is no risk of running into a mirage that upon closer scrutiny will vanish away and leave me with an open mouth, wondering why I never saw things for what they were. Having been let down many times by fake and insincere friends who secretly harboured ill feels towards me, I stand by my sentiments. I say it again; give me an open and honest foe, anyday!

Will Julia Roberts be a true Hindu?

I have just come across an interesting article, Julia Roberts Is Hinduism’s Latest Convert. It tells us about how Julia Roberts has converted to Hinduism. She joins a list of celebrities who seem to have these sudden, out of the blue conversions to religions that no one expected them to convert to.

To mind comes similar past occurances such as: Mike Tyson and Michael Jackson’s flirtations with Islam, Madonna’s venturing into Kabbalah, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ switching to scientology, Orlando Bloom’s turn to Bhuddhism and Isla Fisher who joined Judaism. During the world cup, Alicia Keys was reported to have undergone some traditional Zulu ceremonies in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. It will be wrong to for us to judge the genuineness in the motives of each individual conversion but at the same time, it is worth noting that most of these religious conversions that we read about are performed for gallery so to speak.

We encourage our brothers and sisters in Hollywood to study the dogma and doctrine of their new religions and make sure that they understand and subscribe to it. It is no good converting to Islam, Christianity, Buddhism or other religion just because one has been to some exotic location where they witnessed with romantic eyes, only the face value of the religion. Public displays of conversion tend to be publicity stunts acted out by celebs who have hurt their image and want to facelift it or those out to find a release from their far from normal lifestyles.

Hopefully for Julia Roberts, star of new movie, "Eat, Pray, Love," Hinduism will be more to her than just a bit of meditation and chanting. Do not disappoint us “Pretty Woman.” Religion is not a game.
