Thumbs up to DJ Black Coffee,but...
Thumbs up to South Africa's smoking hot DJ Black Coffee for his amazing sixty hour dee-jaying marathon achieved over the past weekend at Soweto's Maponya Mall. Although the main aim was to raise funds for his charity for the disabled; the Black Coffee Foundation, a well deserved spin-off is the likelihood of a Guiness World Record for the longest time a dee-jay has played with one arm.
Having watched DJ Black Coffee's music videos and observed his interviews on TV, I however feel that it is ironic that he should be in line for a world record for playing music with arm, yet the man appears at times to be ashamed of the fact that he has a disabled arm. In most of the music videos that I have watched, he is filmed from his right side which has the functional arm. If the left side is shown, the disfunctional arm in always in the pocket, as if he is just taking a leisurely stroll with one hand in the pocket. In interviews, the camera shots normally focus above his chest.
I am not saying he needs to stand on the rooftops and shout "Look world, I only have one functional arm," but at the same time there has to be a shift away from trying too hard to hide his disability with a false picture of one with fully bodily function. I am sure that many of his fans will only become aware of his disability now because of the world record. I feel that being totally open about his arm will go even further in inspiring many- people, particularly the disabled youth of South Africa, to go for their dreams, no matter what the stumbling blocks are. All in all though, the man has to be congratulated for his sterling talent and willingness to give back to his community.
